Getting Light Under Control

Room Darkening Materials and Fabrics

While every product allows you some measure of light control, some products offer more room darkening benefits than others. A key consideration is fabric or material type and color. Sheer fabrics typically soften and filter sunlight, while semi-opaque and opaque versions almost completely block sunlight. We say “almost” because these fabrics and materials darken a room but do not entirely eliminate light. As you browse our product collection, look for Privacy & Light Control details listed under Specifications. Fabrics and materials designated as “semi-opaque” (or a rating of 4 or higher) will offer you room darkening benefits.

"Blackout" Explained

If you want to block out as much natural light as possible, look for products designated with our highest Privacy & Light Control rating of 5. These products offer not only fabrics and materials with maximum light-blocking qualities, but they are uniquely designed to minimize light gaps, seams and rout holes such as the de-Light™ feature on many of our horizontal blinds. Window shades and blinds cannot completely eliminate incoming light as there are almost always slight light gaps.

Other Room Darkening Considerations

If you are looking for optional room darkening capabilities, consider a room darkening liner available on many of our shades. The liner can be sewn directly to the face fabric, or for ultimate flexibility, can operate independently.
